On Friday 13th October, Year 5 were treated to a fascinating talk by Cat Totty, who spent six months in Antarctica with the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust from October 2011 to April 2012.
With Year 5 currently learning about 'Ice Worlds' and Polar regions this term, Cat's first hand stories about living on a Polar continent were incredibly engaging and really helped them get an idea of the geographical challenges that occur out there.
Cat discussed how she spent her 6 months in Antarctica sleeping in a tiny hut with three others, no running water and surrounded by thousands of penguins (The girls particularly enjoyed hearing about this bit!) She was part of the team that maintained a series of historic buildings at Port Lockroy, which was Britain's first science base (in 1943) and now remains as a museum and post office. Cat worked as the Post-Mistress whilst living out there and hand postmarked 70,000+ cards!
Thank you to Cat for a truly insightful and inspiring talk.
