On Thursday 26th April 2012 the sporting community of WHS met to celebrate the achievements and contributions girls in Years 11, 12 and 13 have made throughout their time at school. The evening began with some excellent and very funny round up speeches from the Year 11 and 6th Form Squad Captains. This was followed by a brilliant speech from our outgoing Sports Captains Sally Anderson and Sophie Garrett highlighting some of their best memories whilst representing the school at competitions, on tour or just in PE lessons.
We were also lucky enough to welcome a very inspiring guest in the shape of Michael Smith. Michael lost his sight three years ago and gave a moving talk on the struggles he has faced but also the power of sport and its ability to help in the rehabilitation process. Michael’s courage and determination have seen him gain a place on the Great Britain Blind Football Squad for this year’s Paralympic Games. Michael has also dedicated his time to raising money for Blind in Business, a charity that helps young partially sighted or blind individuals increase their confidence and find employment, through events such as his recent London to Amsterdam Charity bike ride.
A whole array of awards was presented on the night including the Year 11’s Player’s Player Award to Mira Adhikari and the Year 12 & 13 Player’s Player Award to Sophie Garrett. The Outstanding Contribution to School Sports was also awarded to Sophie Garrett for her continued dedication and contribution to a variety of squads throughout her time at Wimbledon High as well as her commitment to the PE Department.
