The second Rosewell lecture of the Spring Term was held on Tuesday. Catherine Hawrylowicz is Professor of Immune Regulation in Allergic Disease at King’s College, London. She is also the team leader of the world recognised Asthma Centre which is jointly based at KCL and Imperial College. Her talk on The Science of Asthma took us through an outline of the history, causes and problems of this widespread disease. Shockingly, 30% of us will experience an asthmatic attack in our lifetime, compared to 5% 30 years ago. Catherine then focused on her specific research, revealing the processes and techniques scientific researchers use to create breakthrough solutions, as well as the financial and ethical dilemmas that arise on the way. A fascinating talk, which gave the students a real glimpse of where their futures may lie.
