The French department is enthusiastic and vibrant; we combine grammatical rigour with oral fluency, confidence and fun.

French is a universally important language that is relevant to all careers and teaches students valuable transferable skills (reading for gist, deciphering unknown language, communication skills, essay writing skills, to name but a few).

French in Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9 we cover topics such as:

  • Myself
  • My family
  • Free time and hobbies
  • School
  • The world around me
  • Holidays
  • Television and film
  • Clothes and shopping
  • Food and drink.

In Year 8 all students go on a day trip to Lille.

French IGCSE

We study the Edexcel course, which assesses the 4 key skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Our Year 10 students enjoy a residential study visit to Rouen to practise their language.

French A Level

At A Level we study the EdExcel course, which covers :

  • Les changements dans la société française (changing attitudes to mariage, couples, family)
  • La culture politique et artistique dans les pays francophones (music, media, festivals and traditions)
  • L’immigration et la société multiculturelle française (integration and multiculturalism, immigration, rise of far right)
