The Spanish Department strives to teach lessons that are interesting, fun, lively and challenging, providing an opportunity to develop confidence and independence in the use of the Spanish language. Across all key stages, we encourage the use of the target-language across all four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Key Stage 3

  • Year 7: Talking about oneself, one’s family and school
  • Year 8: Home and local area, Free Time Activities
  • Year 9: Social Life, Home Life and Holidays

Spanish IGCSE

We teach the Edexcel IGCSE course, covering:

  • Home and Abroad
  • Education and World of Work
  • Technology
  • Environment
  • Media
  • Family and Society
  • Social Life

At the end of their first year of the International GCSE Spanish course, Year 10 girls have the opportunity of spending a week studying Spanish in Salamanca, north-west Spain, in order to consolidate and extend their knowledge of Spanish and enhance their cultural understanding of Spain.

Spanish A Level from September 2016

We will study the Edexcel course, with this draft specification:

Papers 1 and 3 will be based on content from the following 4 themes:

  • The evolution of Modern Spanish
  • Politics and Culture in the Spanish-speaking world
  • Immigration and Multicultural Spanish Society
  • The Franco Dictatorship and the Transition to Democracy

Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation (S>E): Total: 1 hour 50 mins  40%

Paper 2: Written Response to works and translation Total: 2 hours 40 mins     30%

  • Study of 2 literary texts or I text and one film
  • Translation from English into Spanish

Paper 3: Speaking 30%

  • Task 1: One topic chosen by student
  • Task 2: Presentation and Discussion on Independent Research Project

There is also the opportunity to take a two-year AS Spanish course. The course will begin in September 2016, for assessment in May/June 2018. This is the draft specification from Edexcel:

Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation (S>E): Total: 1 hour 50 mins 40%

Enrichment opportunities

  • Year 10 Spanish Reading Club
  • Y11-13 Spanish Film Club
  • Annual Languages House Competition

We have participated in the Enrichment programme for Years 11, 12 and 13, offering a six week course on Latin America Nobel Prizewinners for Literature. We participate enthusiastically in the Mind Matters programme, with lectures such as: Diego Rivera: a Mexican Revolutionary Artist; Living in Franco’s Spain; 1898 and All That….. or How Spain’s loss of Empire impacted on 20th Century World History; The life of a Translator (outside speaker and former WHS student).
