The Spanish Department strives to teach lessons that are interesting, fun, lively and challenging, providing an opportunity to develop confidence and independence in the use of the Spanish language. At the end of their first year of the International GCSE Spanish course, Year 10 girls have the opportunity of spending a week studying Spanish in Salamanca, north-west Spain, in order to consolidate and extend their knowledge of Spanish and enhance their cultural understanding of Spain.

We have participated in the Enrichment programme for Years 11, 12 and 13, offering a six week course on Latin America Nobel Prizewinners for Literature. We participate enthusiastically in the Mind Matters programme, with lectures such as: Diego Rivera: a Mexican Revolutionary Artist; Living in Franco’s Spain; 1898 and All That….. or How Spain’s loss of Empire impacted on 20th Century World History; The life of a Translator (outside speaker and former WHS student).
