How might artificial intelligence impact our teaching in the future?

The question kicked off our second pastoral festival of what it is to be human in an AI world when Rose Luckin, Professor of Learner Centred Design, UCL Knowledge Lab, gave a thought provoking presentation on the possibilities for a truly bespoke education. Thankfully, the message was not that human teachers will in any sense become redundant - rather, they would be able to use specific assessment data on each student to hone their teaching of individuals.

The theme of individuality was picked up by Robert Plomin, Professor of Behavioural Genetics, King's College London, whose latest research has caused controversy for its finding that 60% of any child's attainment at GCSE is in his view genetically determined. (For more detail, see WimTeach here).

After a play with the Miro robots that now emerge from time to time in WHS classrooms, as well as the opportunity to try VR headsets and games and applications such as AI in translation, the day continued on a pastoral theme, with talks on digital living: the power of online campaigning, the dangers of debate polarising into extremes, 'wokeness' and body image, amongst others. It was a fascinating day!
