WHS was a-buzz with politics at the end of the Summer term with special events and talks which covered local, national and international political life. On Thursday 24 June, we welcomed local Liberal Democrat MP for Wimbledon, Paul Kohler, who came in for a Q & A with students and to talk about social media.
Over 50 WHS History and Politics students then went to London to see the musical Hamilton, having quizzed Dr Mary Draper, a historian of Early America who is an expert in environmental, imperial, and maritime history, about the real history behind the musical.
This was swiftly followed up with a lunchtime session of our student-led Politics Society who organised a talk by Mariam Yazdani, a sanctions expert and conflict resolution specialist who advises the UN Security Council on sanctions regimes and their implementation. She spoke in depth to the girls about her career and how she got into it and her previous role as a peace mediator, supporting ceasefire negotiations and peace processes in conflict-affected countries.
What an inspiring way to end the term and great food for thought for some further summertime reading!
