This week we launched an exciting new STEAM+ programme for pupils in Year 5, from Wimbledon High Junior School and local partner schools, Granard, Sacred Heart and West Wimbledon Primary schools, which sees them design, build and then race a battery-powered Greenpower Goblin car at a national track.
Over the course of 17 weeks, pupils will build the car from scratch with the support of a Year 10 mentor, WHS Sixth students and staff. The car will be entered into a race later in the summer term, competing against cars built by other schools.
The first session was spent getting to know each other (and enjoying cookies and fruit squash!) and coming up with creative logos for the car. The designs will be shared with the rest of the group next week, with everyone deciding which one will be used as the team logo.
The challenge encourages pupils to work as a team, learn engineering and green skills – and hopefully inspire them to study STEAM subjects in the future!
