Our Maths Department have been delighted by the level of participation and success of our Y7 and Y8 mathematicians who took part in the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) Junior Maths Challenge this year in record numbers, with over 190 students entering!
The Junior Maths Challenge is an annual highlight of the WHS Maths calendar which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency and really gets students thinking.
Head of Maths, Mrs Rees said “This is an amazing achievement and the most we have ever had for qualifying rounds including the Olympiads.”
Out of 153 certificates awarded, Wimbledon High students received:
- 54 Gold
- 55 Silver
- 44 Bronze
Follow on rounds
36 Senior School girls from Y7 and Y8 have qualified for the Junior Kangaroo– a 60 minute, 25 multiple choice challenge. Entry to the Junior Kangaroo is by invitation based on a qualifying JMC score. The name ‘Kangaroo’ acknowledges the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.
And a special mention to the four Y8 girls – Chloe, Nina, Ella and Catherine – who have qualified for the Junior Olympiad – a 2-hour challenge consisting of 6 Olympiad style questions – also by invitation based on a qualifying JMC score.
A very special mention to Ella who received the Gold – Best in School award.
