Reception learn about the School’s 1980 Centenary Celebrations

A special guest - alumna and aunt to reception pupil Maddie - came to speak to the whole yeargroup today about the school's 100th birthday celebrations - and to show everyone the scrapbook she mad of the year.

Our youngest Wimbledon High pupils were treated to a visit last Friday from a special guest who was keen to share with them her scrapbook of memories from an important moment in her school life.
Dr Sarah – Jane Kelland (née Hunt) is what we call a ‘lifer’ – she started in the Junior School in 1973 and continued all the way through to Sixth Form in 1984. She then went on to have a career as a geoscientist after completing her PhD in Earth Sciences at Cambridge University. The family connection with WHS is a strong one, as her sister, Susannah Tow was in the Class of 1986 and their niece, Maddie, is now in Miss Schurch’s reception class!

The yeargroup listened attentively to Sarah – Jane as she showed them her special scrapbook which she had made to commemorate the 100th birthday of the school in 1980 and showed the pupils the Centenary Programme and postcards of her school trip to the Isle of Wight. She told them about the School’s big celebration with fireworks and a very green birthday cake!
There were lots of questions from the pupils – about the uniform, which they discovered is still very similar (apart from a tie, which Sarah- Jane demonstrated how to knot) and what they did for the centenary year. Many were keen to start their own scrapbooks in the future!
Maddie and her aunt were then invited for tea with Mrs Fryer and Maddie did an excellent job of showing her the scrapbook.

Sarah- Jane enjoyed a tour of the Junior School and reminiscing about what had changed, moved and stayed the same! She promises to return to see the whole yeargroup when the school celebrates its 150th birthday in 2030!
