“Even if you’re little, you can do a lot – you mustn’t let a thing like little stop you.”
Never were truer words spoken when it came to this year’s Year 6 production, Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jnr.
Over the past fortnight, the Junior School had been echoing with the sound of ‘revolting children’ as Year 6 prepared for their production of Matilda. Everyone who dropped into rehearsals was impressed by the energy the girls brought to every line, song and dance. The anticipation across the Junior School was palpable as the rest of the Junior pupils prepared to watch the dress rehearsals. The final packed-out performances in our Rutherford Theatre were a wonderful demonstration of the creativity, dedication and teamwork that Year 6 had shown throughout the year.
Working alongside trained professionals, such as choreographer Rebecca Allingham and Director Emily Plumtree, pupils were able to develop their performance skills while bringing this much-loved story to life on stage. Both were struck how every single one of the girls had risen to the challenges presented in rehearsals, and that they had been an absolute dream cast. From the first session teaching the ‘School Song’, it was clear that they were not only talented but also kind and supportive. A particular highlight was teaching Makaton signing to the six Matildas for their solo. By lunchtime, they had taught it to the entire cast, and it was so special to see the girls signing along from the audience. Director Emily Plumtree expressed what an honour it was to direct such an incredible production with such a dedicated cast!
