Tennis is very much part of our DNA here at Wimbledon High. We are proud that our sports ground at Nursery Road was the original home of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club – and the tennis championships themselves – until 1922. Generations of Wimbledon High ball girls have been a part of the Wimbledon Championships year on year and this year they may well have witness up close the talent of Wimbledon wildcard and WHS alumna Hannah Klugman!
As a through-school, we celebrate tennis as a sport at all levels, from our parent – daughter friendlies at Nursery Road where all 14 courts bore witness to Parent and Daughter rivalries in action- to the recent WHS successes of the Surrey Cup (having by a long shot the most number of teams for a single school in the final!) and the GDST Tennis Cup.
Juniors: Tennis success at GDST and Surrey Cups
Our Tennis Squads have enjoyed a hugely successful season, demonstrating exceptional commitment and skill on the court.
At the GDST Tennis Tournament, our players delivered an outstanding performance, winning more than 500 points across the day and defeating all eight opposing teams. Their impressive efforts earned WHS the title of U11 GDST Tennis Champions.
Meanwhile, our teams also competed strongly in the Surrey Tennis League against a range of schools. Following a series of impressive performances, both the U9 and U10 teams progressed to Finals Day, where they continued their winning form and were crowned Surrey Tennis Champions in their respective age groups.
Congratulations to all of our players on these achievements and a fantastic summer of tennis!
Seniors: Ball Girls 2026
This summer, 10 of our Year 9 and Year 10 students are proudly representing Wimbledon High School as Ball Girls on one of the biggest stages in tennis at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships, alongside Emily in Year 12 for her second year.
Following months of dedicated training, they have earned the opportunity to be part of one of the world’s most iconic sporting events. Their selection reflects not only their agility and focus, but also their teamwork, resilience and professionalism under pressure.
Seniors: AELTC tournament at Nursery Road
In May, Years 7–12 competed in a celebration tennis tournament at Nursery Road to celebrate the forthcoming 150th anniversary of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC). We were delighted to welcome Dan Bloxham, Master of Ceremonies at the Wimbledon Championships and Head Coach at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, who opened our tournament. Dan plays a pivotal role in the smooth running of Championship matches at the AELTC. and has many impressive roles including working with both professional and grass route tennis.
The school’s Nursery Road Sports Grounds are the original site of the AELTC, and we are incredibly proud to be stepping onto such historic ground every time we train and compete there – particularly in tennis.
The tournament was a demonstration of excellent competitive spirit. Well done to Rochelle, who was the overall winner, and thank you to all the students who took part!
Alumnae: Hannah Klugman
Hannah left Wimbledon High in 2023 to pursue her tennis career full-time, having earlier that month, still only 14 years-old, become the first British girl to win the prestigious Orange Bowl trophy.
We are enormously proud and look forward to watching her go from strength to strength!
History: Did you know?
Our sports ground at Nursery Road was once the former grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club AELTC?
- The All England Club had been founded solely for croquet but was rapidly overtaken by the new pastime of tennis. The first lawn tennis championships took place on July 9 1877, with the first ladies championships taking place in 1884.
- The Olympic Games were even held there in 1908! With tennis increasing in popularity, the AELTC then decided to move to a bigger site. The last match was played in 1921 and they moved to Church Road in 1922.
- In 1923 Wimbledon High parents and alumnae raised money to purchase the site for the school’s use.
