Martha and Savannah, two of our A Level Spanish students, performed brilliantly in the annual Spanish Debating Competition, hosted this year by Hampton School. They tackled thought-provoking topics, including the relevance of the monarchy in the 21st century, the impact of tourism in Spain, and the value of Humanities versus STEM in an AI-powered world. They spoke with impressive fluency and confidence and were praised for their excellent pronunciation and the incredible variety and complexity of their language. Having won all three debates in the first round, they secured a victory against Hampton in the semi-final to win third place overall out of 16 competing schools. They were thrilled with their prize of several Spanish novels, awarded by a representative from the Spanish Education Ministry in the UK.
Savannah reports:
“Debating entirely in Spanish challenged us to think critically and articulate our ideas under pressure, significantly improving our fluency, confidence, and public speaking skills. Between rounds, we enjoyed connecting with other students who share our passion for the Spanish language and culture. We were delighted to receive an assortment of Spanish-language books, courtesy of the Spanish Department for Education. This competition has been an unforgettable experience, and we’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.”
