On Wednesday we held our annual Sports Awards – a wonderful evening celebrating the fantastic sporting achievements of our students.
240 of our sportswomen from Years 7-13 attended, receiving awards in athletics, cricket, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rowing, skiing, swimming and tennis. Each category was presented by a sports’ captain, with speeches highlighting achievements from the year so far and giving kudos to their fellow sportswomen.
‘Sport has a remarkable ability to shape young people. It teaches lessons that cannot as easily be taught in a classroom: how to respond to pressure, how to deal with disappointment, and how to celebrate others’ achievements.’ – Mrs Coutts-Wood, Director of Sport
We were delighted to welcome WHS alumna Eboni Usoro-Brown, Honorary President of England Netball, as this year’s speaker. Eboni is one of England’s most celebrated netball players, earning 117 international caps across a distinguished 15-year career. A key member of the historic England team that won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she also secured three World Cup bronze medals and competed in four Commonwealth Games. It was a pleasure having Eboni return to the school, sharing her advice and memories in a panel conversation with students in Years 11-13 – also acknowledging the behind-the-scenes support she received from her family and teachers.
Farrah, Netball Captain, added to this, saying: ‘It is important to recognise the teachers and coaches who make all of this possible. The amount of time and effort that goes into organising training sessions, matches, fixtures, tours, and everything else behind the scenes is huge, and without that support none of these achievements would happen.’
With national and international successes abounding, it’s clear that WHS students are making their mark on the world of sport.
And, in the words of Olivia, Football Captain:
‘We didn’t come here to play quietly, we came to change the game loudly.’
