Wimbledon High hosts annual Model United Nations Conference (MUN)

On the 4 October, we opened our doors to 15 schools for the annual WHS MUN Conference.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a unique experience for young people, where debates are held in the style of United Nations resolutions, which pupils representing different countries in the UN. Pupils develop their research skills in advance of conferences, writing draft resolutions which are used as the basis for debate. They also develop diplomacy, public speaking and debating skills, as well as civil discourse, since they may be arguing a country’s position which runs counter to their own beliefs. MUN fuels passion for current affairs and global politics, and many of our previous debaters have gone on to study Law or International Relations as a result of taking part.

Y13 delegate, Sophie G, writes:

We started off the day with an insightful talk by our guest speaker, Dr Sanam Vakil, who spoke about the role of the UN in today’s world and the possibility of reforming the Security Council. Following on from this, we had very fruitful debates in committee sessions, where delegates discussed a wide range of topics, from the efficacy of the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine to the question of the use of AI in diagnostics and treatment. All delegates participated in rigorous, thoughtful discussion and demonstrated a deep understanding of global issues and a genuine commitment to diplomacy. It was inspiring to see delegates challenge one another, negotiate resolutions, and work collaboratively to find solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing our world today.

We would like to extend our thanks to our chairs and helpers for their leadership and organisation, to Ms Gilchrist and Ms Parker for their guidance and support, and to all delegates for bringing such enthusiasm and thoughtfulness to their debates.
