Sport
Sport at WHS is an integral part of school life where all students are encouraged to reach their potential, build confidence and nourish a lifelong love of movement.
Whether it’s rowing on the Thames, competing fiercely in a national cup, enjoying a relaxed game with friends during Sixth Fit or playing on the U12G Netball team, Wimbledon High girls embrace physical activity, teamwork and personal challenge.
Our programme caters for every level -from those discovering a new passion to those aiming for elite performance. Supported by specialised staff and with the benefit of excellent facilities, our students develop strength, skill and resilience through a timetable of coaching, house competitions and fixtures.
We are proud of the many high-performance athletes who regularly represent Wimbledon High at county level, with some going on to compete internationally. Alongside this elite success, our wider sports community celebrates achievements across GDST championships, national competitions and local tournaments. With a vibrant team spirit and opportunities for everyone, sport at Wimbledon High continues to inspire and challenge.

Our three strands of sport
Within the PE Department, sporting opportunities are divided into three key strands to ensure that all students are catered for.
Recreational – At beginner level or new to the sport and looking for fun and informal competitive opportunities such as house competitions and friendly fixtures.
Development – For students looking to develop their skills and performance and wanting to represent the school in competitive fixtures on a regular basis.
Performance – For students displaying a high level of skill and named within the A team squad list.

Co-Curricular Opportunities
There are a vast number of co-curricular sporting opportunities to get involved with outside of regular lessons.
Teams, and individuals, are given opportunities to compete locally and nationally on a regular basis. Recent entries have included the Surrey Schools Floor and Vault Competition, Surrey County Squash Championships, National Independent Schools Football, National Schools’ Grassroots Showjumping Championships, London Youth Games, and Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
As a member of the GDST, students also participate in regular fixtures, competitions and Trust Rallies with other GDST schools across the UK.
ABC of Sport at WHS
Athletics
Athletics plays a vibrant role in our summer term, offering students a range of opportunities to compete, train, and have fun. Our season begins with both selective training before school and recreational sessions during lunchtime at Nursery Road as well as regular training at Wimbledon Park Athletics Track. These sessions help students develop their skills, both on the track and field.
Throughout the term, we participate in a variety of competitive events, including Merton Athletics, Surrey Athletics, ESAA Athletics, and GDST Athletics. These competitions give students the chance to represent the school at local and regional levels, often achieving impressive personal and team results.
We conclude the season with one of the most anticipated events of the year, Sports Day. Held at Wimbledon Park Athletics Track, this celebration brings the entire senior school together. Students compete in a wide range of events, showcasing their talents and earning participation points and medals to contribute to their house’s overall success. It’s a fantastic day of school spirit, sportswomanship, and celebration.
Ball Girls
Since 1999 Wimbledon High School has been fortunate to be part of the BBG (Ball Boys and Girls) programme for the Wimbledon Championships. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to learn ‘rolling’ and ‘feeding’ skills alongside developing speed, fitness, game knowledge and discipline unlike anything else. We have a rigorous internal training programme to select approximately 10 students from across Year 9 and 10 to attend the trials at the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) in January. Our consistent success as a school helps us retain one of the highest possible applicant quotas. It is an extremely competitive process, approximately 170 students are selected by the AELTC from approximately 750 Year 9 and 10 applicants to start the training programme. We are so proud of all the exceptional WHS Ball Girls from across the years.
Cricket
Cricket at Wimbledon High School continues to go from strength to strength, offering outstanding opportunities for players of all abilities to develop their skills and love for the game. With our state-of-the-art five-lane indoor facility, complete with bowling machines, pupils benefit from first-class training all year round.
We proudly field 17 teams across the senior school, with three squads in each year group training in hard ball cricket. Our players compete in weekly summer fixtures as well as major tournaments, including the Surrey Schools Indoor and Summer Cup competitions, where we reached the semi-finals in both events in 2025.
Cricket at WHS is led by Head of Cricket, Dan Creasey, who brings a wealth of experience from working with Surrey and Kent representative players. We are also fortunate to work in partnership with Wimbledon Cricket Club, making use of their outstanding facilities to further enhance the playing experience.
Looking ahead, excitement is building for our Cricket Tour to Dubai in April 2026, where WHS will take part in the prestigious Root Academy Dubai Cup, providing our players with the opportunity to compete internationally.
Cricket at Wimbledon High School is thriving, with a clear pathway from participation to performance, ensuring every student has the chance to excel.
Cross Country
Cross country season begins in the autumn term and offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves both mentally and physically across a variety of terrains and distances. To support our runners, we offer a weekly Cross Country Club every Monday morning, where students head out to Wimbledon Common for training. These sessions help build endurance, mental toughness, and a love for running.
Throughout the term, we compete in a wide range of fixtures, including Merton, Surrey, GDST, and ESAA competitions, as well as invitational events hosted by other schools. These races provide valuable experience and the chance to compete against strong fields of runners from across the region.
Our athletes represent the school both individually and as part of a team, often achieving outstanding results. We are proud to have some fantastic runners who regularly place highly at regional and even national levels, demonstrating true dedication and talent.
Equestrian
Our Equestrian Team is open to experienced horse riders who have access to their own horse. The team provides a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their riding skills and represent the school in a variety of competitions throughout the year.
We compete in events such as Pop-Up Dressage and Show Jumping, giving riders the chance to showcase their technical ability, control, and partnership with their horse. These competitions also allow students to gain valuable experience in a formal setting, often against strong competitors from other schools.
Beyond competition, the equestrian team fosters a supportive and close-knit community. It’s a wonderful way for students with a shared passion for horses to connect across different year groups and building friendships through a unique and rewarding hobby.
Football
Although football has not traditionally been one of our main sports, it is rapidly gaining momentum at WHS. Each week, over 50 pupils attend our early morning training sessions, demonstrating impressive commitment, enthusiasm, and talent.
Throughout the year, our teams compete in a range of tournaments and cup competitions, including GDST, ISFA and ESFA events, as well as friendly fixtures against local schools. These opportunities enable our students to develop their skills, experience competitive match play, and represent WHS with pride.
Golf
Our entry into the National ISGA competition provides competitive opportunities for three golfers in the school to compete in. The format is a scratch competition against the opposition with players going out in lowest handicap order. Teams knocked out in the first round enter an area plate which is handicap stableford.
Hockey
Hockey is a core sport at Wimbledon High. Our programme aims to develop every player, regardless of ability and provide a lifelong passion for the game. We support and encourage all students from our performance players who go on to represent their country, to our participation players who thrive in a nurturing and supportive environment.
We proudly field 25 teams in the senior squad from U12 through to U18. With each age group entering the ISHC and Schools Championship cups, where our U16 squad reached the Semi-Final last year.
Hockey runs throughout Autumn and Spring terms where our students take part in bi-weekly fixtures with Saturday sport also available.
Our Head of Hockey, James Price runs a weekly invitational session where we look at individual technical skills in more depth to enhance the performance pathway. We also offer specific goalkeeping sessions where we look to hone specific skills so our goalkeepers can progress like our outfielders can.
We are proud that many of our students play at Club, County, EAG (England Age Group) and Performance Pathways. We are delighted that a couple of our students has been selected to represent England at U16, U18 and U21s and have other students who are now part of our alumni representing at that level. We have a fantastic link with Wimbledon Hockey Club where we sponsor their 1st XI Women’s side.
We run a yearly 1st XI Hockey tour to Nottingham which enables our senior side to get prepared for the year ahead. Last February (2024) we ran a Hockey tour to Barcelona where our Y8 and Y9 students were able to play against some top Spanish sides and get exposure to the different standard. In October (2024) we ran a senior Hockey tour to South Africa, where our students got to taste a long-haul tour and an opportunity to compete internationally.
Netball
Netball at Wimbledon encourages students of all ages and abilities to experience, enjoy and compete in netball. We are proud to field 28 teams in the senior school, providing plenty of opportunities for our players to compete at various levels. We have five outdoor hard courts, one indoor court, and several astro courts at our disposal to use, ensuring we have the space to provide training for all that attend.
Netball runs throughout both the Autumn and Spring terms, with weekly training sessions and biweekly fixtures, ensuring continuity throughout both terms. Our Head of Netball, Jess Fowler also run a weekly specialist shooting clinic, which is open to all who are looking to improve their shooting. We are keen to provide all of our players with the opportunities to build their netball skills and progress.
Our performance (A) teams benefit from an additional technical training session each week, where they delve further into tactical set plays and prepare for various competitions. These teams are entered into the National ‘Sisters N Sport Cup’, Surrey County tournaments, and we also compete in the National Schools competition at U14, U16 and U19 level.
We are proud that many of our players play at Club, Performance, and Pathway level, continuing their netball development outside of school. We are also thrilled that one of our U15 players has been selected into the U17 England Roses Pathway Squad this year.
Last October (2024) we ran a successful Netball tour to South Africa and are looking ahead to our next long-haul tour, to provide more of our players with opportunities to train and compete internationally.
Rowing
Rowing is much more than just a sport. It is a community built around teamwork, a culture of shared values and experiences. On the beautiful River Thames, our rowers build physical and mental skills, learn how to win and get personal bests, and also how to lose, grow, and try again.
Wimbledon High School Boat Club (WHSBC) is proud to nurture a supportive environment where students who might not yet have ‘found their sport’ can learn rowing from scratch and, in some cases, go on to win national medals, join the prestigious GB rowing programme, or head to the US on a coveted rowing scholarship.
Our boat club has proudly earned medals across national and regional competitions at all age levels, including the National Schools Regatta, Junior Inter Regional Regatta, and London Youth Games. With multiple crews reaching A finals and competing at prestigious events like Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta, our rowers showcase exceptional skill, commitment, and teamwork. These achievements are a testament to the strength and dedication within our club.
We are a well-respected and admired club, and our student rowers combine their training with their academic life admirably, learning those often elusive skills of time management, prioritisation and perspective.
Skiing
We offer a paid for ski program designed for students who are passionate about skiing and eager to improve their skills. Training takes place every half term at Sandown Ski Centre (The Oakwood), where students receive expert coaching to develop their technique and confidence on the slopes.
The program includes participation in a range of competitive events such as the NSSA (National Schools Snowsports Association) races, Precise Racing, and the prestigious British School Girls Slalom Competition held in Flaine, France. These competitions provide excellent opportunities for students to test their abilities against other talented young skiers.
The package covers training sessions, ski kit, and entry into competitions, offering a comprehensive experience for all participants.
Swimming
Swimming is a key part of our sports offering, with training sessions held twice a week to develop technique, fitness, and team spirit. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in friendly galas throughout the year, gaining valuable experience in a supportive environment. More competitive swimmers can also represent the school at national level, including prestigious events such as ESSA (English Schools’ Swimming Association) galas.
Tennis
Tennis is one of the main Sports in the Summer Term and we compete in the LTA Team Tennis, Surrey League, Road to Wimbledon, ISTA and GDST Tennis offerings. For students wishing to develop their Tennis, we offer a breadth of friendly matches against other schools as well as mixed and parent daughter Tennis.
We have regular training in the Summer Term, grouping students by year group or ability.
We have a great standard and consequently reputation as a competitive Tennis school. Many students play in County Squads and one even competed at Wimbledon in the main draw.
Throughout the whole year we run a Tennis Academy programme offering lessons for all abilities. For those interested, please e-mail tennis@wim.gdst.net.
