Building the future at Wimbledon High School

Wimbledon High School was founded on Wimbledon Hill Road in 1880 andover its 140-year history, has grown into the thriving school community we know today.

A ‘beacon school’ within the Girls’ Day School Trust, Wimbledon High School unites a high-achieving school, nationally recognised for excellent academic results, with outstanding pastoral care and a rich co-curricular programme. We nurture happy, confident and unaffected girls.

Our vision is to be a leader in girls’ education from 4 to 18 years, promoting an innovative cross-curricular approach that brings alive learning. In the Junior School, creative themes open up questions and a journey of discovery that tap into our pupils’ imagination. In a similar vein, our new prototype STEAM room, enjoyed by pupils in Juniors and Seniors, brings together science, technology, engineering, arts and maths so that teachers combine traditional subjects to inspire our girls, developing a spirit of inquiry and the skills of independent and collaborative research.

Our greatest challenge in delivering our vision is the physical setting of the school. Whilst we are very proud of our architectural heritage and our historic position in the heart of the community, we are significantly restricted by the current layout of our estate, the pressure on communal spaces and the condition of some of our key buildings. We believe passionately that the built environment and learning spaces should reflect the educational philosophy of the school.

As part of a long-term strategy to deliver our educational vision, we are now embarking on Project Ex-Humilibus, reconfiguring and building space to enhance the site for all. Our areas of focus are:

  • Expanding and redeveloping the science block to create a STEAM Tower, providing a unique space for cross curricular study and research for girls of all ages
  • A new Sixth Form Centre that offers an inspiring, sophisticated, and appropriate space that bridges school and university life
  • A new, beautifully enclosed and secure, ‘playground in the sky’ for Junior girls
  • Enhanced facilities for assembly and dining, re-siting our dining hall and creating a new assembly hall under the new Sixth Form Centre
  • The development work will also lead to the relocation of our senior library into the current senior hall and the redevelopment of five classrooms including a modern languages suite
