Last Thursday saw the inaugural meeting of the Wimbledon Union, our new Senior School debating society.
The motion – This House believes the time has come for the UK to become a Republic – could not have been more topical and our four Sixth Form speakers spoke eloquently and passionately on both sides of the debate. Keya, Antonia, Georgia and Verity covered a vast range of topics, including the link between the crown and our colonial history, the diplomatic benefits of having a neutral Head of State, the ways in which the monarch is exempt from specific laws and on the idea of monarchy as a constitutional bulwark against the excesses of our democratically elected leaders. The opposition carried the debate by a slim margin and King Charles can rest easily upon the throne, knowing that his reign is secure for the time being.
