To join in with the global celebration of all things Computer Science related, the Computer Science Department and Year 7s-10s have enjoyed a variety of educational and fun activities all week in their CS lessons.

Year 7s primarily were using Lightbot Hour of Code, which increased in difficulty as they were introduced to sequences, procedures and loops. It was great to see students working out and helping each other as the tasks became more complex but their expressions of joy after they solved a problem was priceless! Lots of ‘yesses’, ‘high fives’ and ‘arms waving in the air’!

Year 8s thoroughly enjoyed working with microbits and neopixels; they were programming the microbits to light the LEDs in different ways. This was very exciting for the students and to see their lights light up a dark classroom just added to the effect. Some students moved on to madewithcode where they used their creative skills making Christmas emojis.

Our Year 9s also enjoyed the microbits and neopixels and were also excitedly working in Minecraft Education building and collaborating in their own worlds - we had a pink bungalow which then had many underground rooms, sheep grazing a field, and lots of parrots in the ceiling of a grandeur house!

Our Year 10s were using App Shed to program their very first web apps. These ranged from a Recipe App to a Maths Aid. It was great to see collaboration and to witness how their idea developed over the week all the way to the final product on their phones.

Overall this has been a fun, exciting week and appreciation of what Computer Science is all about. The girls have developed valuable skills such as problem solving, design, planning, programming and working collaboratively which will help them in their future careers.
