Our Year 12s and 13s were geared up to take on the best debaters in the country at the prestigious final of the Cambridge Union Schools Competition at the weekend. Having qualified from over 1000 speakers, it was a treat for our girls to be able to debate in the oldest speaking Union in the world. The Cambridge Union has a rich history of controversial debates and influential speakers.

Congratulations to Lucy and Catherine who, after competing in four rounds of ferocious debates, were astounded to break to the semi-finals. Again, they beat teams from great debating schools like St Paul’s Girls, Eton and Westminster to get there. Their semi-final motion was ‘This house favours a Trump presidency over a Sanders presidency’ and it stretched them to the limits of their knowledge. But watching them debate in the Cambridge Union itself they showed no nerves and competed superbly against the best teams in the country. Lucy and Catherine are now in the top 8 debating teams nationally and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. Both girls have attended debating society consistently since Year 8 and it is through much practice and feedback that they have reached this incredibly high level in Year 13.
