Senior Co-Curricular

Saturday 11th March saw two teams of Wimbledon High School coders and future engineers competing in the First Lego League regional competition in Epsom.

Our teams were made of a mix of girls in Years 8 and 9, who had prepared for the competition for months, giving up the lunchtimes in the computer room. The competition saw them being judged on their solutions to the problem of energy consumption and their teamwork.

After a grilling from the judges, they competed on the Lego tables in the robot game; each round consisting of 3 minutes of frantically cheering on their robot as it whizzed around the table.

We were delighted that our two teams received two awards. Congratulations to Issy, Georgia, Maddy, Maria, Zaeemah, Emily, Christina from Team Co-ordin8 (Judges Award) and the intrepid duo from Team Tech- No- Logic, Lily and Jackie who impressed the judges with their robot design.

This success comes hot on the heels of Wimbledon High students Lily, Georgia, Sydney and Chloe placing third (and indeed just missing second place) in the region in the national CyberFirst competition (run by the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ). With challenges covering topics from cryptography and logic to artificial intelligence, the event inspired students to think big in their future career choices within this increasingly vital sector. Well done girls!

It was great for our students to meet the other teams in both competitions (and to beat all GDST rivals in CyberFirst) and we look forward to competing again next year.
