It has been a busy time for our young chess players recently, with two tournaments over the last two weekends - the U-10 Surrey Mike Basman Memorial event and the Surrey Megafinals...
Chess club leader and Woman Chess Grandmaster, Susan Lalic, reports:
Wimbledon High Junior School was represented by a very able group of players from all age groups - Julia and Lilian from year 2, Aarya, Anantara, Leyli and Emmy in year 3, Parisa and Elizabeth in year 4, Florence and Sophie year 5 and Wenxin year 6.
A special mention to Parisa who came top girl in the U-10 section ( which is for Year 5 and below) and also 2nd in the Surrey Megafinals and has qualified for the South of England Gigafinals. Aarya came 2nd in the U-8 section, thus also qualifying and is pictured receiving her medal with Parisa.
Florence and Sophie B played in their first ever chess event and got off to a great start in the U-10 event by both winning their first 2 games. Florence came 3rd after 6 rounds and has qualified for the Gigafinals. Sophie just needed an extra half a point to qualify.
Wenxin put in a strong performance in the Megafinal U-11 section and just missed qualifying by half a point! Elizabeth was a strong contender in the U-9 event, as were Anantara, Emmy and Leyli in the U-8 section and Julia and Lilian in the U-7's.
Well done to all and we look forward to seeing your next moves!
