Last week, Y6 embarked on a memorable afternoon adventure with their counterparts from King's College. The scenic backdrop of Wimbledon Common served as the perfect setting for an immersive experience with nature. Inspired by W.H. Davies' renowned poem "Leisure," the young poets-in-the-making were tasked with crafting sensory poems, employing vivid descriptions of what they could hear, see, touch and smell within the enchanting woods.

Divided into teams,  pupils eagerly and imaginatively unleashed their creativity, weaving words that brought the sights and sounds of the forest to life. Each poem beautifully captured the essence of their personal encounters with nature, embracing both the tranquillity and vibrancy found in the woods.

Taking cues from Davies' poetic techniques, the boys and girls skillfully employed similes and personification to convey their profound connection with the natural world. Their use of similes allowed them to draw striking comparisons, while personification breathed life into inanimate objects, enhancing the readers' experience and fostering a deeper appreciation for nature's wonders. As the sunlight filtered through the lush foliage, whispers of the wind tickled their ears, and the scent of damp earth permeated the air, the pupils wove these sensory elements seamlessly into their verses. The poems painted a rich tapestry of emotions, ranging from awe and serenity to excitement and curiosity.

The collaboration between Y6 and those from King's College proved to be an exceptional opportunity for shared learning and creative expression. Through this poetry workshop, our budding wordsmiths discovered the power of language in capturing the beauty of the natural world, inviting readers to pause and reflect on the treasures that lie just beyond our doorsteps. With their pens as brushes and words as paint, these young poets unveiled a masterpiece of their own, serving as a reminder of the remarkable experiences nature has to offer. The sensory poems crafted during this enchanting afternoon will forever stand as a testament to the enduring allure of the great outdoors and the limitless possibilities of the written word.
