At the beginning of May, Year 3 set off for their very first residential.

There was great excitement as the suitcases and backpacks were carried down the hill towards the coach that was taking us to High Ashurst in Dorking. When we arrived, after enjoying our packed lunches, the girls went to their first activities on the climbing wall and high ropes. There was courage and self-belief in abundance as the girls first went up the wall and then traversed across it with their peers supporting them and cheering them on. The girls on the ropes overcame any nerves and climbed with great confidence.

That afternoon we settled into our cabins and beds were made. This task was accompanied by shrieks of laughter as the rooms with four or five girls in settled into their new home and unpacked. We spent the first evening around the camp fire and sang songs while the fire crackled gently. The next day brought some very heavy rain and hail storms but this did not dampen Year 3's spirits. During a brief break from the hail storm some of the groups of Year 3 broke out loudly into the WHS song, much to the surprise of the High Ashurst team. The girls took part in the Challenge course and worked on their team-work skills.  Others enjoyed a woodland skills session which involved making dens and making fire and roasting popcorn.

The final evening, we went on a night walk and learnt about some of the history of High Ashurst and saw the old coach house, the cellar and the remains of the house and the ornate staircase that had been used by the Canadians in the Second World War. The girls enjoyed the rather muddy walk before going happily to bed. We were so impressed with the independence that the girls showed on their first residential.

The girls all returned home with great tales to tell of the new adventures and friends that they had made.
