Spanish students in Years 10 to 13 took part in a fantastic (and somewhat frenetic) online Cuban cookery class last week.
The class was hosted by Migrateful, a social enterprise which supports refugees and asylum seekers and enables them to teach their traditional cuisines. The Spanish department started working with Migrateful last year and we are proud to continue supporting them annually, exploring a different Hispanic cuisine each time.
Our lively chef for the evening was Lola, who used to work as a vet in Cuba before moving to the UK. As well as guiding us through two delicious recipes - congrí (black beans and rice) and quimbombo (okra stew with fried plantain) - Lola told us about life in Cuba and ended the class with some salsa dancing.
Naturally, the class was delivered entirely in Spanish and, more unexpectedly, moved at quite a fast pace! Our students did a very impressive job of following the instructions and coped with the linguistic and practical challenges with their characteristic resilience and enthusiasm. Well done to all who took part.
"It was great to try something new and I enjoyed the immersive experience with the whole class being in Spanish." - Francesca Y11
“I enjoyed learning new phrases in Spanish for cooking and following recipes.“ - Alexandra Y12
"The food was amazing - really delicious - and my family and I enjoyed eating it for a few days afterwards. Lola was so lovely and warm. It was great for my Spanish listening skills to be tested with her Cuban accent. I loved hearing Lola’s Cuban accent and the facilitator’s Argentinian accent." - Laura Y11
