Leaving school at lunchtime on Friday 17th March were 13 excited delegates and 1 guest chair, heading off to attend the Model United Nations conference until Sunday 19th March at Haileybury School in Hertforshire, the largest school conference in the UK.

This is a prestigious event, with teams of students from different schools across the UK and beyond representing different member states of the United Nations, who take part in debates that simulate the workings of the UN. After a storming success last year representing South Sudan, this year we were allocated the rather daunting task of representing Poland and Russia. Thorough prior research is necessary for students to be able to faithfully represent the policies and ideologies of their assigned country. In working with their fellow delegates to formulate resolutions that address global issues, students practised skills of diplomacy and engaged in constructive civil discourse.

All the students did a tremendous job of representing their assigned countries in their committees, and Sharanya in Year 11 was an immensely poised, authoritative and calm co-chair of the Human Rights committee. Archana in Year 8, Alex C, Elisabeth, Chanchri, and Sofia in Year 10, Ella and Alex S in Year 11, Hrishita and Lucy in Year 12 all represented their countries with diligence, eloquence and insight.

We also received five awards: Bea in Year 8 received Highly Commended Delegate and Elspie in Year 11 achieved Distinguished Delegate in Historical Event Committee, Lara in Year 11 achieved Distinguished Delegate in the Security Council, and Isabel in Year 12 achieved Distinguished Delegate in the Conference Special Committee. Not only that, but the Russian delegation achieved Distinguished Delegation overall, the highest award there is.

For students wishing to join MUN, they are welcome to take part in the club on Wednesday lunchtimes – no prior experience is required!
