TEDx Wimbledon High School

We’ve all watched and been inspired by TED Talks. So the prospect of hosting our very own session here at Wimbledon High School* was deeply exciting. It did not disappoint.

Curiosity, challenge, scepticism, inspiration and action were the five words that flashed up in bright, bold red letters at the start of Wednesday night’s TEDx event in the Rutherford Centre. Students from across the school, Years 6-13, wowed the audience with their thought-provoking talks on a range of subjects, as they embraced the overriding theme of ‘future’, their young minds bringing different lenses and fresh thinking.

Will Artificial Intelligence bring salvation or condemnation for the human race? What value do we place on the Arts in a time of STEM? What is the smart future of buildings? And how is society changing the way we speak?… These and other burning questions were posed and impressively tackled full-on by students as they challenged their audience to look and think again. And by the way, don’t mention ‘out of the box’ thinking to Allegra (Y8) - she has a far better angle on problem solving…

For those not able to make the talks live, they will of course be shared with a larger (worldwide!) audience online in due course. In the meantime, congratulations to all participants and indeed to the initiative’s mastermind, Mr Nick Sharman, who writes:

This weeks TEDxWimbledonHighSchool truly demonstrated the spirit of TEDx with talks ranging from gender neutral language to living under the sea and everything in between. I am so proud of all 15 student speakers that have worked tirelessly, collaboratively and with such passion over the last 6 months. I am extremely sad that it has come to an end, or has it?
