Yesterday was Wimbledon High School’s 143rd Birthday!

We celebrated with a special assembly, including the ceremonial cake cutting by the oldest and youngest students, a performance from the Y3/4 choir, a special rendition of Happy Birthday, speeches from the Head, Ms Kennedy; Deputy Head of Juniors, Mrs Chittenden; and Head Girl Poorna; and perhaps the most exciting part – 1000 cupcakes for all the students to share!

In her celebratory address, Ms Kennedy discussed the importance birthdays, saying, “Birthdays aren’t really about getting older, although getting older is great and worth celebrating. Birthdays are about having the opportunity in our busy and distracted lives to pause and say to someone, for one day out of the 365 in a year, I really love you, I appreciate you, I think you are worth celebrating.

When we extrapolate that out to our school, it makes me feel quite emotional…I feel emotional when I think about 143 years of students and staff singing happy birthday to their beloved school on this special day, imagining 286 of our oldest and youngest pupils over the generations cutting a specially baked birthday cake. That we, in essence, take time to throw a birthday party for our school, Wimbledon High to say thank you, to say we really love you, we appreciate you, you are worth celebrating – even if we can take our school and its culture and opportunities and security and loveliness for granted most of the other days of the year.”

Thank you to all staff and students for such a wonderful celebration day (and Thomas Franks for providing the delicious cakes)!
